White Marks on Quartz Worktops: Causes and What Can Be Done

White marks on quartz worktops are one of the most common complaints from kitchen owners. They appear seemingly out of nowhere and can make a beautiful worktop look dull and damaged. Understanding what causes white marks on quartz — and what can actually be done about them — helps you choose the right response.

Common Causes of White Marks on Quartz

Limescale Deposits

The most common cause of white marks on quartz is limescale — calcium and magnesium deposits left by hard water. These form wherever water sits and evaporates: around the sink, by the kettle, or near the tap. Limescale marks are surface deposits on the quartz, not damage to the stone itself. They respond to appropriate cleaning with a diluted acid product (vinegar or specialist limescale remover) and do not require repair.

Chemical Bleaching

Bleach and bleach-based cleaning products (including some bathroom sprays used in kitchens) can chemically bleach the resin binders in quartz, leaving permanent white or lighter patches. Unlike limescale, bleach damage cannot be cleaned off — it represents a change in the material itself. Chemical bleach damage on quartz is difficult to repair as the white patch may extend below the surface.

Heat Damage

Placing hot pots, pans or appliances directly on quartz can cause thermal shock in the resin matrix — resulting in white, cloudy or discoloured patches. Heat damage to quartz is permanent and cannot be reversed. Surface polishing may reduce the visibility of mild heat marks, but deep thermal damage requires chip/damage repair techniques to address.

Etching from Acids

Quartz is more acid-resistant than marble, but prolonged contact with strong acids (lemon juice left to sit, vinegar, or cleaning products) can etch the surface, leaving dull patches that appear lighter in certain lighting. Mild etching may respond to polishing; deeper etching requires surface restoration.

What Can Be Done?
