Travertine is a naturally porous limestone that forms with characteristic voids and channels in the surface. It is widely used in floors, wall cladding, shower enclosures and fireplace surrounds throughout UK homes — but its softness and porosity make it particularly vulnerable to chipping, pitting, staining and surface deterioration. Types of Travertine Damage
Natural Pitting and Void Fill
Many travertine tiles are “filled” during manufacture — the natural voids are filled with a cementitious or resin compound and polished flush. Over time, this fill can deteriorate, fall out or discolour, leaving exposed voids in the tile surface. We re-fill these voids using colour-matched stone filler and polish them flush to restore a seamless appearance.
Edge and Corner Chipping
Travertine tiles chip relatively easily at exposed edges — particularly on stairs, door thresholds, bath surrounds and kitchen plinths. Chips are repaired with colour-matched stone repair compound, then hand-finished to blend with the surrounding tile texture and colour.
Crack Repair
Hairline and larger cracks — from substrate movement or impact — can be filled and blended invisibly using stone repair compounds. Where a tile is cracked through and structurally unstable, tile replacement is more appropriate and we can advise accordingly.
Staining and Surface Deterioration
Travertine is prone to staining from acidic liquids (citrus, vinegar, cleaning products) which etch the polished surface and from oil and grease penetration into unfilled voids. We address staining using specialised stone cleaning and where the surface has been etched, polishing can restore the original finish.
Honed vs Polished Travertine
Travertine is available in honed (matt) and polished (glossy) finishes. Honed travertine is more forgiving for repairs as the finish is easier to match. Polished travertine requires careful polishing to restore the gloss level consistently across the repaired area. Our technicians work with both finishes.
