Stainless steel sinks are workhorses of the kitchen — tough, hygienic and long-lasting. But they’re not invulnerable. Scratches accumulate from daily use, dents appear from heavy impacts and surface discolouration can set in from harsh chemicals or heat. Shazam Repairs carries out professional stainless steel sink repair, restoring the finish and removing or minimising damage.
Types of Stainless Steel Sink Damage
- Scratches — fine scratches from cutlery, pans and cleaning pads are the most common issue and develop a matt patch effect over the polished or brushed surface
- Dents — from heavy impacts, most commonly from pots or heavy objects dropped into the basin
- Discolouration — heat discolouration (blue-gold tones) from placing hot pans directly on the surface, or chemical bleaching from harsh cleaners
- Rust spots — small rust deposits from external sources (iron particles from pans or taps) sitting on the surface — not actually stainless steel corrosion in most cases
- Chip damage to the rim or edge — less common on stainless but can occur at sharp corners or edges
Scratch Repair on Stainless Steel Sinks
Surface scratches on brushed stainless steel sinks can be significantly improved by careful mechanical abrasion in the direction of the grain, using progressively finer abrasives followed by the appropriate brushed finish compound. This blends the scratch marks into the surrounding surface grain, making individual scratches invisible.
Polished stainless sinks are more challenging — any abrasive work needs to be followed by careful re-polishing to restore the mirror finish without swirl marks.
Dent Repair on Stainless Steel Sinks
Minor dents may be improvable with specialist techniques, though stainless steel work-hardens when deformed and some dents cannot be removed fully without leaving surface distortion. Our technicians will assess each case and advise on realistic outcomes.
