Laminate worktops are the most common kitchen surface in UK homes — practical, affordable, and available in hundreds of finishes. But they’re also the easiest to scratch, particularly with knife use, abrasive cleaning, or dragging appliances across the surface. Once the laminate surface layer is scratched through, the question is whether it can be repaired or needs replacing.
Can You Fix Scratches in Laminate?
It depends on how deep the scratches are:
- Very light surface marks — can sometimes be improved with a laminate polish or scratch remover, working in the direction of any surface grain. This reduces visibility without fully removing the scratch.
- Moderate scratches through the laminate layer — require a colour-matched filler to fill the scratch. Professional results are good on plain or lightly textured laminates; patterned laminates (e.g. fake wood grain or stone effects) are harder to match.
- Deep cuts exposing the dark MDF/chipboard substrate — the dark substrate contrasts strongly with the laminate colour and makes the scratch very visible. Filling and colour-matching is the professional approach.
What About Widespread Scratch Damage?
If the entire surface of a laminate worktop is covered in fine scratches (which can happen when abrasive cleaning products are used regularly), individual repair isn’t practical. In this case, the options are:
- Full worktop replacement — a new laminate worktop, including supply and fitting, typically costs £300–£800 depending on size and material
- Worktop overlay — a new surface bonded over the existing worktop (not recommended where there’s existing damage that might telegraph through)
Prevention: How to Protect Laminate
Laminate worktops last much longer with a few simple habits: always use a chopping board; use coasters for hot drinks and trivets for hot pans; clean with non-abrasive cloths and mild cleaners. Avoid the common mistake of using cream cleaners like Cif — these are mildly abrasive and gradually dull and scratch the surface.
