What Causes Surfaces to Fade in Sunlight?
Fading is caused by ultraviolet (UV) light breaking down the pigments and resins near the surface of a material. Over months and years, the areas that catch the most direct sun lose colour depth and can look chalky, yellowed or bleached compared with shaded sections under wall units or behind appliances. Heat from the sun accelerates the process, which is why worktops beside large windows, conservatory surfaces and the tops of freestanding furniture tend to show it first.
The effect is usually gradual and uneven, and that unevenness is exactly why it stands out. A surface that fades uniformly can be easy to live with; one with a sharp line between faded and unfaded areas draws the eye every time you walk into the room.
Which Surfaces Can Be Restored — and Which Can’t
Most fading sits in the top layer of the material, so laminate worktops, composite and solid-surface tops, painted and sprayed finishes, and many resin-based surfaces respond well to professional colour restoration or refinishing. Wooden worktops and furniture that have greyed or lightened can often be sanded back and re-oiled or re-finished to recover their tone.
Natural stone such as marble and granite rarely “fades” in the pigment sense, but it can dull, etch or discolour and can usually be re-polished. The surfaces that are hardest to rescue are ones where the colour ran all the way through and has degraded deep into the material, or where UV has made a plastic brittle and cracked. Even then, a sprayed refinish can frequently even out the appearance. The only way to know for certain is to have the specific material and the depth of fading assessed.

Most single-surface restorations are completed in a single visit, often within a few hours, and the surface is usable again shortly afterwards once any finish has cured. How long the result lasts depends on how much direct sun the surface continues to receive and on the material itself. A properly refinished or re-sealed surface will hold its colour for years under normal conditions.

Once a surface is restored, a few simple habits help protect it: use blinds or UV-filtering window film on the sunniest windows, reposition freestanding furniture and accessories occasionally so no single strip takes all the exposure, and keep sealed surfaces sealed.
