Cracked Shower Tray: Repair or Replace?

A crack in a shower tray is more serious than a chip in a bath — because shower trays are under constant water exposure and a breach in the surface can allow water to penetrate to the floor structure below. But not every crack means the tray must be replaced. Whether repair is the right answer depends on the type of crack, the tray material, and where the damage is located.

Types of Shower Tray Cracks

  • Surface cracks (crazing) — a network of fine cracks in the surface coating only, not penetrating the full depth of the material. Common in older acrylic trays that have been cleaned with abrasives. Usually cosmetic only.
  • Through-cracks — cracks that penetrate the full thickness of the tray material. These allow water ingress and must be treated as a priority.
  • Stress cracks — caused by flex in the tray due to inadequate support from below. The tray moves when stood on, and the crack will re-open even if repaired unless the underlying support issue is fixed first.
  • Impact cracks — caused by a dropped object; typically a single crack or chip rather than a stress pattern.

Can a Cracked Shower Tray Be Repaired?

Surface crazing — yes. A professional resurfacing can cover surface crazing and provide a fresh, sealed surface.

Impact chips and small cracks — yes, in most cases. A specialist filler can be used to seal the crack and rebuild the surface, which is then colour-matched and finished. The repair creates a waterproof seal.

Stress cracks — repair is possible but the underlying cause (flex from poor support) must be addressed first, otherwise the crack will reopen. If the tray can be properly supported, the crack can then be repaired.

Large through-cracks spanning most of the tray — replacement is usually the safer option.

Why Act Quickly?

Water penetrating a cracked shower tray can cause significant damage to the floor structure, joists, and ceiling below — particularly in upstairs bathrooms. What starts as a small repair becomes a much larger and more expensive problem if left. If you have a crack that goes all the way through, stop using the shower until it’s assessed.
