Corian and Solid Surface Worktop Repair: Scratches, Burns and Chips in Acrylic Solid Surface

Corian and other acrylic solid surface worktops — Staron, HI-MACS, LG Hausys, Avonite and similar — are popular in UK kitchens, bathrooms and commercial environments for their seamless joins, non-porous surface and design flexibility. They’re also one of the easier worktop materials to repair, because the solid colour or pattern runs through the full thickness of the material — but getting an invisible repair still requires professional skill and the right tools.

Common Corian and Solid Surface Problems

  • Scratches — from knives, pans, abrasive cleaners or everyday use
  • Burn marks — from hot pans or appliances placed directly on the surface
  • Chips and gouges — from dropped items or heavy impact
  • Staining — from chemicals, bleach, food acids or prolonged contact with staining agents
  • Seam failure — joins between sections opening up or becoming visible

The Good News About Solid Surface Repair

Acrylic solid surface materials were designed to be repairable. Because the colour and pattern run through the full depth of the material, sanding out surface damage is a genuine option for minor scratches and scuffs — and the material responds well to this. Manufacturers actively promote repairability as a feature of solid surface materials.

Scratch Repair

Light to moderate scratches can be sanded and re-polished to restore the surface. The process involves working through progressively finer abrasives and finishing with the appropriate sheen level for the worktop (matt, satin or gloss). This is a professional process — attempting it without experience typically leaves visible sanding marks or sheen inconsistency.

Burn and Chip Repair

Deep burns and chips require filling with a compatible solid surface adhesive or filler, colour-matched to the worktop, before sanding and finishing. On plain or near-plain colours this is typically very effective. On patterned or marbled designs, colour-matching is more complex and results vary.

Seam Repair

Failed or visible seams in solid surface worktops can be re-bonded and refinished by a specialist. The joint is cleaned out, re-adhered with the correct solid surface adhesive, and sanded flush and blended — resulting in a seam that should once again be virtually invisible.
