Composite Worktop Repair: Chips, Scratches and Surface Damage

Composite worktops — made from a blend of stone particles, resins and pigments — are a popular choice in UK kitchens for their durability, consistent colour and lower price point compared to natural stone. Brands like Silestone, Compac, HanStone, Technistone and own-label composites from kitchen retailers are all composite or engineered stone products.

What Is a Composite Worktop?

The term “composite worktop” is sometimes used loosely and can refer to different product types. In the UK kitchen market it most often means either engineered quartz (around 90–95% crushed quartz bound with polymer resin) or a lower-density composite made with a mix of materials including marble dust, acrylic or polyester resins, and pigments. Understanding which type you have matters because repair techniques differ slightly between them.

Common Composite Worktop Damage

  • Chips — from dropped items, especially near edges and the sink cutout
  • Scratches — from knives, abrasive cleaners or grit dragged across the surface
  • Cracks — from thermal shock (very hot pans) or structural movement
  • Staining — certain foods, wine and chemicals can leave marks on some composites
  • Edge and corner damage — profile edges are vulnerable to chipping

How We Repair Composite Worktops

We use specialist colour-matched filler compounds and resins to repair chips and cracks in composite worktops on-site. For quartz-type composites, we work with materials that match the particle-in-resin appearance. For acrylic or polyester composite types, we use flexible fillers that blend into the solid colour.

The repair is sanded and finished to match the surface texture — honed, polished or matte — and we can achieve invisible or near-invisible results on most damage types in solid or close-to-solid colour composites.

Challenging Repairs on Composite Worktops

Composite worktops with strong veining, heavy aggregate patterns or multi-tonal flecks are harder to repair invisibly than plain or lightly textured colours. We are always honest about the likely visibility of a repair on complex patterned surfaces — you can decide whether repair or replacement is the right call.
