Bathroom Basin Repair: Wall-Hung, Pedestal and Countertop Sink Damage

Bathroom basins take a lot of daily use and are vulnerable to chips, cracks and surface damage. Whether you have a classic pedestal basin, a sleek wall-hung basin or a countertop vessel sink, professional repair can restore your basin to a near-original finish for a fraction of the cost of replacement. Here’s what you need to know about basin repair.

Common Types of Basin Damage

Chips and Nicks on the Rim

The rim of a basin is the most vulnerable area — soap dispensers, bottles and taps are constantly knocked against it. On vitreous china basins (the vast majority of UK bathroom basins), the surface is a hard glaze over a clay body. When the glaze chips away, the grey or cream clay body is exposed and the area will stain rapidly. Rim chips are the most common basin repair.

Hairline Cracks

Hairline cracks can develop in vitreous china through thermal shock (very hot water followed by cold), impact, or settlement movement in the fixing. A hairline crack that goes through the full thickness of the basin wall is a structural issue and should be evaluated carefully — water can track through the crack and cause damage to the wall or floor beneath. Surface cracks in the glaze only can be repaired cosmetically.

Scratches on Countertop Basins

Countertop vessel basins made from stone, resin or composite materials can develop scratches and surface marks. Depending on the material, these can sometimes be polished out or filled and re-finished by a surface repair specialist.

Staining and Discolouration

Persistent staining around the plughole, taps or in the basin bowl can sometimes be addressed with specialist cleaning and surface treatment, though deep staining in porous or damaged glaze may require resurfacing.

Can Vitreous China Basins Be Repaired?

Yes — chips in vitreous china basins are among the most commonly repaired bathroom surfaces. A specialist uses a filled resin compound matched to the basin colour, applied and cured to create a hard, smooth repair. The repaired area is then polished to blend with the surrounding glaze. Results on a white or off-white basin are typically very good.

When Replacement Is Necessary

A basin with a through-crack that is leaking should be replaced rather than repaired — no surface repair will waterproof a structural crack under water pressure. Similarly, a basin with extensive crazing, multiple large chips or advanced staining throughout may be better replaced than repaired, though this will depend on a specialist assessment.
