Can You Fix Scratched Wood Floors Without Replacing Them?

If your wooden floor is covered in scratches from pet claws, dragged furniture or years of foot traffic, your first instinct might be that it needs sanding back to bare wood — or replacing altogether. The good news: in the vast majority of cases, scratched wood floors can be repaired in place, without replacement and often without a full sand and refinish. Here’s what’s fixable, what it costs in the UK, and when to call in a professional.

Why scratched floors rarely need replacing

Most scratches only affect the finish — the lacquer, oil or varnish layer that sits on top of the timber. The wood underneath is usually untouched. That means the damage can be blended, filled and re-sealed locally, restoring the floor’s appearance for a fraction of the cost of new flooring. Even engineered wood floors, which have a thinner wear layer than solid boards, can normally be spot-repaired several times before replacement is ever a consideration.

Surface scratches vs deep gouges: what’s fixable

Light surface scratches — the fine white lines you see when light catches the floor — sit entirely in the finish and are the easiest to correct. They can be buffed out and re-coated locally. Deeper scratches that have broken through into the timber can be filled with colour-matched hard wax fillers, then grained and lacquered so the repair disappears into the surrounding boards. Even gouges several millimetres deep are repairable with professional scratch repair techniques. The only genuine candidates for board replacement are floors with widespread water damage, rot or structural movement — scratches alone almost never justify it.

What professional floor scratch repair costs in the UK

A professional repair to a localised area of scratching typically costs between £120 and £300, depending on the size of the area, the depth of the damage and the finish that needs matching. A half-day call-out covering several scratched areas in one property usually runs £250–£450. Compare that with sanding and refinishing an entire room (often £500–£1,000+) or replacing an engineered wood floor (£60–£120 per square metre supplied and fitted), and localised repair is comfortably the most economical route for scratch damage.

DIY fixes — and where they go wrong

Wax crayons, scratch-repair pens and walnut rubbing all have their place for a single hairline mark. The problems start with colour matching: wood tones vary board to board, and an off-shade filler can look worse than the scratch. DIY lacquer touch-ups also tend to leave a visible sheen difference — a shiny patch on a matt floor. If the scratch is deep, in a prominent spot, or your floor has a distinctive stain or grain, a professional colour-matched repair will be invisible where a DIY attempt often isn’t.

How long does a repair take?

Most localised scratch repairs are completed in one visit of one to three hours, and the floor can usually be walked on the same day. There’s no need to clear the room, no dust from full-scale sanding, and no days of downtime — which is why landlords, letting agents and hotels use on-site floor repairs between tenancies and bookings rather than re-flooring.
