Can You Repair a Chip in a Black Granite Worktop? Yes — Here’s How

Black granite — whether Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Black Pearl, Angola Black or one of dozens of other varieties — is one of the most popular worktop choices for modern kitchens. It’s also one where chips are particularly visible because the light void in a dark surface stands out dramatically. The good news: black granite chips are very repairable.

Why Black Granite Chips Show More

A chip in granite creates a void where the polished surface layer has broken away. The exposed material beneath is typically lighter in colour — even in “black” granites, the unpolished substrate is grey or white. Against the deep black polished surface, this shows as a bright white or grey spot that catches the light.

The Repair Process for Black Granite

Professional repair for black granite involves cleaning the chip thoroughly, mixing a black-tinted two-part epoxy compound matched to the specific granite colour (Absolute Black differs from Black Galaxy which differs from Black Pearl), building the repair in thin layers, curing, then sanding level and polishing to the high gloss typical of black granite surfaces.

Matching Different Types of Black Granite

Absolute Black and Similar Uniform Blacks

Uniform black granites (no mineral pattern) are the most straightforward to repair — the colour match is simply a deep black, and achieving a polished black finish to match is very achievable. Results are typically excellent.

Black Galaxy, Black Pearl and Patterned Blacks

These granites feature mineral inclusions (gold, silver or copper specks and patterns) against the black background. The repair compound is mixed to include similar metallic elements where possible. Results are very good — the repair blends well under normal lighting.
