Surface Repair After a Kitchen Flood or Water Damage: What’s Salvageable?

Water damage in a kitchen or bathroom can affect worktops, tiles, flooring and fitted furniture. Once the water source is fixed and the area dried out, assessing what can be repaired versus what needs replacing is the next step — and the answer is often more positive than people expect.

How Water Affects Different Surface Types

Stone Worktops (Granite, Quartz, Marble)

Stone worktops are generally unaffected by water itself — they’re impermeable. The risk is water getting into joints, causing the substrate below to swell, or lifting seam adhesive. Edge chipping from swollen substrate pressing against the stone underside is repairable. Lifted seams can be re-bonded.

Laminate Worktops

Laminate is highly vulnerable to water ingress, particularly at joins, cut edges and around sinks. Swelling, delamination and lifting are common. Surface chips and small areas of lifting at edges can be repaired, but widespread swelling usually means replacement.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles

Tiles themselves are water-resistant, but water beneath tiles can cause debonding. Hollow-sounding tiles that were previously bonded indicate water damage to the adhesive layer. Cracked or chipped tiles can be repaired; hollow tiles need re-bonding or replacement.

Baths and Shower Trays

Acrylic and fibreglass baths can crack under pressure if their support has been washed away by water damage. Hairline cracks are repairable; structural cracks affecting the bath’s rigidity may require replacement.

Insurance Claims and Surface Repair

If you’re making a home insurance claim for water damage, professional repair is usually significantly cheaper than the replacement cost an insurer might otherwise pay. We can provide written quotes and before/after documentation suitable for insurance purposes.
