How to Prevent Kitchen Surface Damage: Protecting Your Worktop Investment

A quality kitchen worktop is a significant investment. Quartz, granite, Corian and Dekton worktops cost hundreds to thousands of pounds. While professional repair can address damage when it occurs, prevention is always preferable — both for aesthetic reasons and to protect the structural integrity of the surface. This guide covers the most effective ways to prevent kitchen worktop damage.

Use Trivets and Heat Mats — Every Time

Thermal shock is the most common cause of cracks in quartz, granite and Dekton. Always use a trivet or heat mat under pans from the hob, baking trays from the oven, slow cookers, air fryers and coffee machines that generate localised heat. This single habit prevents the majority of catastrophic worktop failures.

Use Chopping Boards

Cutting directly on a stone, quartz or Corian surface won’t just damage the surface — it will also damage your knives. Ceramic knives in particular can chip quartz surfaces. Always use a chopping board.

Protect Edges and Corners

Most chips occur at edges and corners from impacts — appliances being pulled out, pans knocking the edge, objects dropped from above. Be particularly careful when moving heavy appliances across the worktop surface near edges, and near cutouts where the slab is thinner and more vulnerable.

Clean Properly

For quartz: avoid bleach and highly acidic cleaners. For marble: avoid any acid-based products (even lemon juice). For granite: ensure it’s properly sealed and reseal every 1–2 years. For timber: re-oil regularly and don’t let water pool. Correct cleaning prevents surface degradation that makes surfaces more vulnerable to damage.

If Damage Does Occur

Act promptly. A small chip that’s addressed quickly is a simple repair. A chip left with water or debris getting into it, or that’s in a high-contact area and gets enlarged over time, becomes more complex. Get a free repair quote →
