Marble is softer and more porous than granite or quartz, making it vulnerable to scratching, chipping and etching. Chips in Marble Worktops
Marble chips in the same way as other stones — from impact at edges, corners and around sink cutouts. The chip exposes the inner structure of the stone and can be filled with colour-matched epoxy or polyester compounds. Because marble has natural veining, achieving a truly invisible repair on a heavily veined surface is challenging but the result is usually a very significant improvement on the unrepaired chip.
Cracks in Marble Worktops
Marble is more prone to cracking than harder stones because of its relatively lower tensile strength. Cracks are often found near hob cutouts, at sink edges and across long spans with inadequate support. Hairline cracks can be stabilised and filled. Larger cracks may require more extensive repair or, in some cases, slab replacement.
Etching: The Most Common Marble Problem
Etching is not chipping — it is chemical damage caused by acids reacting with the calcium carbonate in the marble. Lemon juice, wine, tomatoes, vinegar and many cleaning products will etch marble instantly on contact, leaving dull, rough patches that look like rings or marks even after the surface is dry.
Light etching can be polished out by a professional using specialist marble polishing compounds and diamond pads. More severe etching or large etched areas may require re-honing of the entire surface to restore a uniform finish.
Staining on Marble
Because marble is porous, oil, red wine, coffee and other pigmented substances can soak in and leave deep stains. Surface stains can sometimes be drawn out using a poultice. Deep stains may require honing to remove, which changes the surface finish from polished to honed.
Can Marble Be Restored?
A heavily used, etched, scratched and stained marble worktop can often be significantly restored by a professional stone restoration specialist. Full re-honing and re-polishing can return a worn marble surface to something close to its original appearance.
