Quartz worktops are marketed as highly durable — and in most respects they are. But one of their known vulnerabilities is heat. Unlike granite, which was formed under volcanic conditions, quartz worktops contain polymer resin binders that can be damaged by very high temperatures. Hot pans placed directly on a quartz surface can leave permanent-looking marks that many homeowners assume cannot be fixed.
What Does Heat Damage Look Like on Quartz?
- Discolouration — yellowing, browning or whitening in the shape of the pan base
- Crazing — a network of tiny cracks across the surface caused by rapid thermal change
- Surface dulling — the polished finish becomes dull or matt in the affected area
- Delamination — in severe cases, the surface layer can lift or blister
Can Quartz Burn Marks Be Repaired?
This depends on the type and depth of the damage. Light discolouration and surface dulling can sometimes be improved by professional polishing and surface treatment. More significant damage — deep crazing, whitening or delamination — requires a different approach.

When Is Replacement the Only Option?

How to Prevent Quartz Heat Damage
- Always use a trivet or heat mat under hot pans and dishes
- Avoid placing hot oven dishes directly from the oven onto the surface
- Be cautious with air fryers and instant pots, which can radiate significant heat downward
- Keep the area around a hot hob protected during cooking
