Kitchen Worktop Chip Near Sink: Why It Happens and How It’s Fixed

The area around the kitchen sink is the single most likely place for a worktop chip to occur. If you’ve noticed a chip, crack or spalling around your sink cutout, you’re not alone — it’s by far the most common repair we carry out. This guide explains why sink area chips are so common and exactly how we fix them.

Why the Sink Area Is So Vulnerable

Several factors converge at the sink cutout to make it the worktop’s weak point:

  • Structural discontinuity — the cutout removes material from the worktop slab, leaving the strips either side and the back edge unsupported. These thinner sections carry more stress than the surrounding worktop.
  • Constant vibration — the weight of the sink itself, movement from filling and emptying, and the opening and closing of under-sink cupboard doors all create micro-vibrations at the cutout edge over time
  • Thermal cycling — hot water followed by cold water repeatedly stresses the material around the cutout through expansion and contraction
  • Impact from below — items stored under the sink, particularly cleaning products and water filters, frequently knock against the underside of the worktop near the cutout
  • Poor installation — inadequate support, incorrect silicone at the sink seal, or an incorrectly sized cutout can all create stress concentrations

What the Damage Looks Like

Sink area chips typically appear at the inner corners of the rectangular cutout — these are the highest-stress points where cracks are most likely to initiate. You may see a single angular chip, or the beginning of a diagonal crack running from the corner of the cutout toward the worktop edge.

How We Fix Sink Area Chips

  • The sink may need to be temporarily removed for full access in some cases
  • The chip or crack is cleaned, assessed for depth and structural significance
  • For cracks, a structural consolidant is applied before cosmetic filling
  • Colour-matched resin filler is applied in layers, cured and sanded
  • The surface is polished to match the surrounding sheen level
  • Silicone around the sink seal is checked and renewed if needed
