Laminate Worktop Repair: Chips, Lifting Edges and Surface Damage

Laminate worktops — brands such as Formica, Duropal, Wilsonart, Axiom and own-brand products from the major kitchen manufacturers — represent the most common worktop type in the UK. Despite being relatively affordable to replace, professional repair of laminate worktops can still be cost-effective for landlords, social housing providers and homeowners who simply want a specific chip or damaged area addressed without changing the whole worktop.

Types of Laminate Worktop Damage

Chips and Impact Damage

Laminate worktops can chip at corners and edges from impact. Unlike stone, when laminate chips, the damage often reveals the dark MDF core beneath the decorative laminate surface — making the damage particularly visible. Colour-matched repair compounds can fill the chip and significantly reduce its visibility, though matching the decorative laminate print precisely is challenging.

Burns

Laminate is highly susceptible to heat damage — hot pans, oven dishes and electrical appliances all cause burning and blistering of the decorative surface. Burns often penetrate through the laminate layer into the substrate. Repair reduces the visibility of burn marks but results depend heavily on the size and depth of the burn.

Lifting Edges and Delamination

The front edge strip of a laminate worktop — typically a matching post-formed edge or a square edge with applied strip — can lift or separate from the substrate. This is often caused by water ingress or adhesive failure over time. Re-bonding the edge strip with appropriate adhesive and clamping is a practical repair for this type of damage.

Scratches

Deep scratches in the laminate surface that have penetrated through the decorative layer can be filled and touched up to reduce visibility. Light surface scratches that have not broken the surface may not be repairable in a meaningful way.

Is Laminate Worth Repairing?

Repair is worth considering when: the worktop is in otherwise good condition with just one or two defects; when a matching replacement worktop is no longer available; for rental properties where the worktop does not need to be perfect but does need to be presentable; or for a quick fix ahead of a sale or tenancy check-in.
