Common Types of Granite Floor Damage
Corner and Edge Chipping
The most common type of granite floor damage. Chips at tile corners and edges are caused by impact from shoes, furniture legs, dropped items and heavy appliances. Repair uses colour-matched stone repair compound, applied and polished to blend with the surrounding tile.
Surface Scratches
Despite granite’s hardness, sharp materials (quartz grit tracked in from outside, metal chair feet) can leave scratch marks in the polished surface. Light scratches can be polished out; deeper scratches require filling before polishing.
Cracked Tiles
Cracking occurs from substrate flex, point loading from heavy furniture, or inadequate bedding mortar beneath the tile. Hairline cracks can be filled and colour-matched. Through-cracks where the tile is structurally compromised may require tile replacement rather than repair.
Staining
Granite is relatively resistant to staining compared to marble or limestone, but oil, rust, and some chemical stains can penetrate an unsealed or poorly sealed granite floor. Specialist stone cleaning and sealing addresses most staining issues.
Polished vs Honed Granite Floors
Polished granite has a high-gloss mirror finish and is used in formal settings. Honed granite has a flat, matt finish and is more commonly used in kitchens and high-traffic areas. Both finishes are repairable — the matching technique differs for each.
