Shower Enclosure and Glass Screen Repair: Chips, Seals and Frame Damage

Shower enclosures and glass screens are expensive to replace — a quality frameless glass screen costs anywhere from £300 to £1,500 fitted, and traditional framed enclosures aren’t cheap either. When damage occurs — whether it’s a chip in the frame, a failed seal, a cracked tray or a mark on the shower itself — repair is almost always the sensible first step. Here’s what can and can’t be repaired on shower enclosures and glass screens.

What Can Be Repaired on Shower Enclosures?

Shower Tray Chips and Cracks

The shower tray is the most frequently damaged part of a shower enclosure — and the most repairable. Chips to acrylic, stone resin and ceramic trays can all be colour-matched and filled professionally. Tray cracks can also be repaired in most cases, though a structural crack should be assessed to rule out a substrate or drainage problem beneath.

Frame Chips and Coating Damage

Chrome, brushed nickel and matt black shower frames can chip or scratch, exposing the aluminium beneath. Frame damage can be colour-matched and coated to restore the finish — the result won’t be the same as the original factory coating but is a good visual match under normal conditions.

Silicone Seal Failure

Failed silicone seals are one of the most common and straightforward shower repairs. Old silicone goes discoloured, mouldy and separates from the surface — allowing water to penetrate behind the tray or wall. Removing old silicone and resealing with fresh product is a clean, permanent fix.

Discolouration and Limescale Damage

Shower trays and enclosure bases can discolour over time from mineral deposits, cleaning product residues and wear. Surface polishing and treatment can restore the appearance in many cases — particularly on acrylic trays.

What Can’t Be Repaired?

  • Broken glass panels — safety glass cannot be repaired; it must be replaced
  • Shattered or structurally compromised trays — where the crack runs through the full depth of the tray material
  • Frames that are buckled or structurally deformed — cosmetic repair is possible but structural issues require replacement
