Surface Repair Guarantees: What to Ask Before You Book

Not all surface repair services are equal — and when you’re investing in a professional repair, you should understand what guarantees are offered and what they cover. This guide explains what to look for in a surface repair guarantee, what questions to ask before booking, and what realistic expectations look like for professional repairs.

What a Good Surface Repair Guarantee Covers

A professional surface repair guarantee should cover the repair workmanship for a defined period — typically 12 months to 2 years for residential repairs. Within that period, if the repair material lifts, cracks, discolours or fails in a way that suggests workmanship or material quality issues, the repairer should return and address it at no additional cost.

A good guarantee is specific: it states what it covers (the repair material and application), what it doesn’t cover (physical damage to the repair after completion, normal wear, deliberate misuse), and how to make a claim.

What Guarantees Typically Don’t Cover

  • New damage — if a chip appears next to the repair after completion, that’s new damage, not a failure of the original repair
  • Incorrect aftercare — using bleach-based cleaners or abrasive pads on the repair shortly after completion can damage the repair material, and this wouldn’t typically be covered
  • Normal surface wear — the repair is guaranteed, not the whole surface
  • Colour change in the surrounding original surface — if the original bath yellows over time, the colour match may drift

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  • “What guarantee does the repair come with, and what does it cover?”
  • “Are you insured for public liability in case of accidental damage during the repair visit?”
  • “Can you show me examples of similar repairs you’ve completed?”
  • “What aftercare do I need to follow after the repair?”
  • “What’s your process if I’m not happy with the result?”

Red Flags to Watch For

  • No clear answer on guarantee period
  • Reluctance to show previous work or customer references
  • Unusually low quotes that suggest substandard materials
  • No mention of aftercare requirements
  • Cash-only with no receipts or written agreement
