High-Gloss Kitchen Door Repair: Fixing Chips, Scratches and Delamination

High-gloss kitchen doors are among the most challenging surfaces to repair well — the mirror-like finish and light-reflective properties of gloss mean that any imperfection in the repair becomes highly visible. But with the right materials, skills and colour-matching, chips, scratches and delamination in gloss kitchen doors can be repaired to a standard that’s invisible in normal use.

Types of High-Gloss Kitchen Door

Understanding what your gloss doors are made from is essential to getting the repair right:

Acrylic High-Gloss Doors

Acrylic-faced doors have a solid acrylic panel bonded to an MDF substrate. The acrylic gives an exceptionally high-gloss finish and good impact resistance. Chips can be filled with colour-matched acrylic filler. Scratches can sometimes be polished out if they’re surface-level. Delamination — where the acrylic peels away from the MDF — is a structural issue that requires the panel to be re-bonded or replaced.

Painted High-Gloss Doors (2-Pack)

Some kitchen doors are sprayed with a two-pack paint system to achieve a gloss finish. These are repairable using the same 2-pack or single-pack systems — the key is getting an exact colour match, as even slight differences in colour or sheen level will be very visible on a plain gloss surface. Our technicians use spectrophotometers and on-site colour adjustment to achieve the closest possible match.

Vinyl-Wrapped Gloss Doors

Cheaper gloss doors use a high-gloss vinyl wrap over an MDF or chipboard core. These are more prone to delamination at edges and corners, and more difficult to repair invisibly — because the vinyl surface is impossible to colour-match perfectly once damaged. Small chips can be filled and polished; lifting edges can be re-bonded. However, full wrap replacement may be more cost-effective for extensive damage.

The Challenge of Gloss Repair

The reason gloss kitchen door repair commands a premium is the precision required. Any colour variation, sheen difference or texture in the repair area will be visible from across the room. Our technicians use professional colour-matching equipment, specialist fillers and polishing compounds to deliver repairs that meet the high standard the surface demands.
