Can You Repair Chipped or Scratched uPVC Windows? What’s Possible

uPVC windows are durable and low-maintenance, but they’re not immune to damage. Impact chips, scratches, and discolouration are common — and because uPVC is white or cream throughout (or, on coloured profiles, has a coloured outer foil over a white core), the options for repair differ from materials like wood or metal.

Types of uPVC Window Damage

  • Surface scratches — marks on the outer face of the profile that don’t penetrate deeply
  • Impact chips — pieces missing from the edge or face of the frame, typically caused by a knock or tool impact
  • Yellowing and discolouration — UV degradation causing white uPVC to turn cream or yellow over time
  • Crack damage — cracks in the profile, often at corners or around hardware
  • Coloured foil damage — chips or tears to the decorative foil on coloured or woodgrain uPVC profiles

What Can Be Repaired?

Impact chips and surface damage — a colour-matched filler can be applied to fill chips in white uPVC frames, sanded flush and finished to blend with the surrounding surface. On white frames this works very well. On coloured or foil-wrapped frames, precise colour-matching is more challenging but achievable by specialist technicians.

Yellowing — superficial yellowing can sometimes be improved with specialist uPVC restorer products. More severe yellowing is harder to reverse without repainting, but the frame can be sprayed with a UV-stable exterior paint in a matching or complementary colour.

Cracks — hairline cracks can sometimes be stabilised and filled. Structural cracks — particularly in the corner welds — are more serious and may require section or full frame replacement for safety.

uPVC Respraying: A Full Colour Change

One option increasingly popular with homeowners is uPVC respraying — where the entire window frame (and often doors too) is professionally spray-painted in a new colour. Anthracite grey, black, and other contemporary colours can dramatically update the look of a property at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows.
