A common question before booking a repair is “will it be invisible?” The honest answer is: it depends. Professional surface repair can produce results that are invisible from normal viewing distance in typical conditions — but several factors affect how visible the repair is. Understanding these helps set realistic expectations and avoids disappointment.
Factors That Improve Repair Visibility
Uniform, Dark Surfaces
Absolute black granite and similarly uniform, dark worktops are the most repair-friendly surfaces. There’s no pattern to replicate and the dark colour absorbs minor variations. A skilled repair on absolute black is very often truly invisible.
Edge Chips vs Surface Chips
Edge chips are generally more visible than surface chips because they’re seen from the side and the repair compound must meet the original surface on two planes. That said, edge chips are very commonly repaired to an excellent standard.
Factors That Reduce Repair Invisibility
Pronounced Veining or Pattern
Heavily veined marble or quartz requires the veining pattern to be replicated in the repair. This is skilled, time-consuming work — and the result is rarely perfect under very close inspection. From normal viewing distance it typically looks excellent.
Very Light Colours
White and pale grey surfaces show colour variation more than dark surfaces. Minor shade differences that would disappear against a dark background are visible against a pale one.
Large Chip Size
Small chips (under 5mm) can be filled and finished to a nearly invisible result. Larger chips (over 15–20mm) have more surface area and perimeter where the repair meets the original — increasing the likelihood of a visible boundary under certain lighting conditions.
Age and Patina of the Surface
Old worktops develop a patina — micro-scratches, slight dulling, colour shift over time. A repair compound matched to the original colour will be slightly brighter and more polished than the surrounding aged surface. This is the most common reason a repair is visible in an aged kitchen. We account for this during colour matching where possible.
