Surface repair pricing can seem opaque — quotes vary widely and it’s not always obvious why one job costs more than another. This guide explains the main factors that drive surface repair costs so you know what to expect and can evaluate quotes with confidence.
1. The Material Being Repaired
Different materials require different techniques, products, and skill levels:
- Acrylic and enamel baths — typically the most straightforward; well-established repair techniques and materials
- Natural stone (granite, quartz, marble) — requires colour-matching with stone flecks; pattern-matching on quartz adds complexity
- Solid wood — grain direction must be replicated; relatively accessible for a skilled technician
- High gloss surfaces — achieving the right sheen level is technically demanding and adds to cost
- Patterned or textured surfaces — texture replication adds time and skill requirement
2. The Size and Nature of the Damage
A small chip (under 10mm) requires less material and less time than a large chip (50mm+). However, size isn’t everything — a small chip in a difficult location (such as the centre of a patterned quartz worktop) may cost more to repair than a larger chip at the edge of a plain white bath.
Cracks are generally more complex than chips — they require stabilisation as well as cosmetic repair. Multiple pieces of damage in different locations on the same surface add time.
3. Colour Complexity
White is the cheapest colour to match — it’s a single pigment with no variation. As colours become more complex, more mixing and testing is required:
- Plain light colours — straightforward
- Mid-tones and earth tones — moderate complexity
- Stone patterns (granite, quartz) — complex; requires multiple pigments and physical stone particles
- Wood grain patterns — requires tinting, grain painting and layering
4. Access and Location
Repairs in awkward locations (inside a corner, in a tight space, at floor level) take more time than repairs with good access. Location in the country also affects pricing — labour costs in London and the South East are higher than in northern England or Wales.
5. Number of Items
When a technician visits for multiple repairs, the travel and set-up costs are shared across the job, reducing the effective cost per repair. It’s always more economical to book multiple repairs in a single visit.
