High Gloss Kitchen Door Repair: Chips, Scratches and Marks

High gloss kitchen doors look stunning when new — but they show every mark, scratch and chip far more readily than any other kitchen finish. If you’ve got a chipped edge or scratched surface on a high gloss door, you’ll know how visible it is. The good news is that professional repair is possible on most high gloss finishes.

What Are High Gloss Kitchen Doors Made Of?

Most high gloss kitchen doors in UK homes are one of the following:

  • Acrylic-faced MDF — a high-gloss acrylic sheet bonded to an MDF substrate; the most common type
  • High gloss foil-wrapped MDF — a PVC or polyester foil with a high-gloss finish, heat-pressed to the MDF
  • Lacquered MDF — MDF sprayed with multiple coats of lacquer to achieve the gloss finish
  • UV-cured lacquer — similar to standard lacquered but harder-wearing

The repair approach varies by type, which is why a professional assessment matters before proceeding.

Can High Gloss Kitchen Doors Be Repaired?

Edge and corner chips — yes. A colour-matched filler is applied to rebuild the chipped area, then sanded and polished to the appropriate gloss level. The most challenging aspect is matching the sheen — getting the same mirror finish as the surrounding door. A specialist can achieve a very good result on white and light-coloured doors; darker colours are harder to match exactly.

Scratches — depends on depth. Very fine surface marks on acrylic-faced doors can sometimes be polished out with plastic polish. Deeper scratches require filling and polishing. On lacquered doors, localised touch-up with fresh lacquer is possible.

Lifting foil — where the foil is separating from the MDF, it can be re-adhered at edges where the substrate is undamaged. If the foil has torn or the area is large, door replacement may be more practical.

Is It Worth Repairing vs. Replacing the Door?

A single high gloss replacement door costs £40–£150 depending on size and supplier, plus fitting. However, finding an exact colour match for a door that’s a few years old can be very difficult — the original finish may have been discontinued or colours may have drifted slightly. A professional repair that blends the existing colour is often more successful than a replacement door that doesn’t quite match.
