Wet rooms present a unique surface maintenance challenge — entirely waterproofed environments where water contacts every surface continuously. When damage occurs, it needs addressing carefully, because the waterproofing integrity matters as much as cosmetic appearance.
Common Wet Room Surface Problems
- Tile chips and cracks — chips in wall and floor tiles are common; cracks may indicate movement in the substrate and need investigation
- Grout deterioration — crumbling, cracking or heavily discoloured grout is critical as it allows water penetration behind tiles
- Failed silicone — waterproof seals at junctions (floor to wall) failing or going mouldy
- Limescale and staining — heavy build-up on tiles and fittings
What Can Be Repaired?
Tile chips (cosmetic) — where a chip doesn’t penetrate through to the adhesive behind, colour-matched repair restores the waterproof surface and appearance. Excellent results on plain tiles; patterned tiles require more specialist skill.
Grout replacement — deteriorated grout can be raked out and replaced with fresh waterproof grout. This is essential maintenance in a wet room, not just cosmetic improvement.
Silicone re-sealing — failed or mouldy silicone at wet room junctions should be removed entirely and replaced with mould-resistant waterproof sealant. Critical for waterproofing integrity.
When Structural Assessment Is Essential
If tiles are cracked rather than chipped — particularly floor tiles — the cause needs to be investigated before any repair. Cracking may indicate movement in the floor structure or failure of the tanking membrane beneath the tiles. Cosmetic repair over a structural problem in a wet room can lead to significant water damage to the floor and ceiling below.
