Travertine Floor Repair: Pitting, Chips and Hollow Spots Explained

Travertine is one of the most beautiful — and most misunderstood — natural stone flooring materials. Its characteristic pitting, honeycombed structure and relatively soft surface make it prone to specific types of damage that require specialist understanding to repair correctly.

Understanding Travertine’s Natural Structure

Travertine forms from calcium carbonate deposits around hot springs, creating a porous stone with natural voids and cavities. Better-quality travertine is supplied filled (voids pre-filled with grout or epoxy) or unfilled (the voids left open, creating a rustic appearance). Both types are prone to their own specific damage patterns.

Types of Travertine Damage We Repair

  • Pitting — small holes opening up in filled travertine where the original filler has failed or fallen out
  • Chips — corner and edge chips common on travertine tiles, especially around thresholds and doorways
  • Hollow spots — tiles that sound hollow when tapped, indicating debonding from the substrate (these require re-bonding or replacement rather than surface repair)
  • Cracks — hairline or structural cracks through tiles
  • Etch marks — dull spots on polished travertine caused by acidic liquids (wine, citrus, cleaning products)

Travertine Pitting Repair

Pitting in filled travertine is repaired by cleaning the void, applying a colour-matched filler compound, and finishing flush with the surrounding surface. For polished travertine, the repair is then polished to match the gloss level. Results are excellent on small to medium pitting.

Travertine vs Limestone vs Marble Repair

Travertine, limestone and marble are all calcium-based stones and respond similarly to repair techniques. The key difference with travertine is the need to match the specific beige, cream, walnut or gold tones and the pitted texture pattern.
