Surface repair is frequently misunderstood — by homeowners who’ve had bad experiences with DIY kits, by landlords given wrong advice, and even by some trade professionals who aren’t familiar with what professional repair can achieve. This guide addresses the most common myths and misconceptions about surface repair.
Myth 1: “You Can’t Repair Quartz — It Has to Be Replaced”
False. Chips and cracks in quartz worktops can be repaired professionally with specialist stone repair compounds. The result isn’t perfect from an inch away, but viewed normally it’s very effective. The vast majority of quartz chip repairs we carry out cost a fraction of worktop replacement and satisfy customers completely.
Myth 2: “DIY Bath Repair Kits Work Just as Well as Professional Repair”
False. Consumer-grade repair kits use inferior materials, are difficult to colour-match without professional pigment systems, and typically produce results that look worse than the original damage when colour-matching fails or the repair yellows within months. Professional repair uses commercial-grade materials and skilled colour-matching that DIY cannot replicate.
Myth 3: “The Repair Will Always Be Visible”
Partially false. On complex patterned surfaces, some repairs may require very close inspection to spot. On solid-colour surfaces — white baths, plain white tiles, plain quartz — professional repair is typically invisible at normal viewing distance. We’re honest when a repair won’t be invisible; there are cases where we advise replacement instead. But the “it’ll always show” assumption causes many people to avoid repair when it would have produced an excellent result.
Myth 4: “It’s Not Worth Repairing an Old Bath”
Generally false. An older bath that’s structurally sound, the right size and the right position in the bathroom often costs significantly more to replace (including plumbing, tiling disruption, redecoration) than to repair. A chip repair on a 15-year-old bath costs the same as on a 5-year-old bath.
Myth 5: “Landlords Have to Replace Damaged Items — They Can’t Just Repair”
False. If a professional repair restores the surface to a standard comparable to pre-damage condition, that is a legitimate remedy. Tenancy deposit schemes consistently support repair over replacement where repair is appropriate, achievable and proportionate.
Myth 6: “Surface Repair Doesn’t Last”
False when done professionally. Professional repairs using commercial-grade materials, properly prepared surfaces and correct aftercare last for many years. DIY repairs with cheap materials may not last — which is likely the source of this myth.
