Stone fireplaces — whether marble, granite, limestone or slate — are expensive features that add significant value to a property. Chips to the mantle shelf, cracks in the hearth, spalling surround stones and damaged corbels are all repairable without the cost of full replacement.
Types of Fireplace Stone Damage We Repair
- Chips to marble or granite mantle edges
- Cracks in limestone or slate hearths
- Spalling or flaking on surround stones
- Impact damage to corbels or pilasters
- Scratches on polished marble surfaces
- Etch marks on marble from cleaning products
How Stone Fireplace Chip Repair Works
For chips to mantle edges or surround stones, we use colour-matched two-part epoxy compounds mixed to match the specific stone colour, veining and texture. The repair is built up in layers, cured, then sanded and polished to match the surrounding finish level. For marble etch marks, diamond polishing can restore the original gloss.
Can You Repair a Cracked Hearth?
Hairline cracks in stone hearths can be injected with coloured resin and polished level. Structural cracks or large spalled areas may require stone patching or section replacement by a stonemason — we’ll advise honestly on which approach is needed.
Period Fireplaces and Listed Properties
For period homes, replacing original fireplace stonework is often not permitted or not desirable. Repair is the correct approach both aesthetically and in terms of property value.
