Solid surface worktops — marketed under brand names including Corian (DuPont/Dupont), Hi-Macs (LG), Staron (Samsung) and Avonite — offer a distinct advantage over stone or quartz when it comes to repair: they’re the same colour and composition all the way through, making seamless repair significantly easier in many cases.
What Makes Solid Surface Different to Repair
Unlike granite or quartz, solid surface is not a surface coating over a different substrate — it’s homogeneous throughout. This means shallow chips and scratches can often be sanded back and re-polished to effectively “erase” the damage, particularly on plain or near-plain colours.
Repair Options for Solid Surface
Sanding and Re-Polishing
For shallow chips (where not too much material is missing) and surface scratches on plain-coloured solid surface, diamond sanding and re-polishing is often the best approach. The surrounding area is sanded level and the finish re-matched. On matt or satin finish solid surface this is particularly effective.
Fill and Polish
For deeper chips where material must be replaced, a compatible solid surface adhesive compound in the correct colour is used to fill the void, built up level, sanded and polished. For complex patterns (granite-look or multi-colour solid surface), colour mixing is needed.
