A cracked or chipped shower tray can be more than just an eyesore — moisture can penetrate through damage and cause water ingress behind the enclosure, mould growth and structural damage to the floor and walls beneath. Professional shower tray repair addresses the damage quickly and cost-effectively, usually without any disruption to the plumbing or enclosure.
Types of Shower Trays and How They Repair
Acrylic Shower Trays
The most common type in UK homes — lightweight, relatively affordable, and available in many sizes and colours. Acrylic shower trays can crack from point loading (standing in a spot without adequate support underneath), from impact damage, or from flexing. Chips occur from dropped items. Acrylic cracks and chips can be repaired professionally to a high standard using colour-matched acrylic compounds.
Stone Resin / Mineral Cast Shower Trays
Stone resin trays (Coram, Kudos, Roman, Matki) are heavier and more rigid than acrylic. They are less prone to cracking but can chip or crack from heavy impact. Repair follows similar principles to stone resin bath repair — colour-matched compound, built up and finished to match the tray surface.
Ceramic and Porcelain Shower Trays
Ceramic trays have an enamel or glaze coating over a ceramic base, similar to a traditional bath. Chips expose the ceramic core underneath. Repair uses porcelain/enamel repair compounds matched to the tray colour.
Slate-Effect and Textured Trays
Textured shower trays — slate-effect, pebble-effect or brushed finishes — are more challenging to repair invisibly because the surface texture must also be replicated. Small chips in the field of the tray or at the edge can typically be repaired; large damaged areas in the centre of a heavily textured tray are more difficult to make invisible.
Common Shower Tray Problems
- Hairline cracks from point loading or insufficient support
- Edge chips where the tray meets the wall or enclosure frame
- Impact chips from dropped shampoo bottles or fittings
- Drain area cracking around the waste fitting
- Yellowing or staining of white acrylic trays
