Scratched Glass Hob: Can It Be Repaired or Does It Need Replacing?

A scratched glass hob is frustrating — ceramic and induction hobs look sleek when new, but even careful use can leave fine scratches from pans, utensils or grit caught underneath cookware. Deep scratches are particularly noticeable on black glass hobs. Here’s what you need to know about glass hob scratch repair.

Types of Glass Hob Damage

  • Fine surface scratches — often from daily use, dragging pans, or cleaning with abrasive cloths. Can sometimes be reduced with specialist polishing compounds.
  • Deep scratches — from harder objects or significant impact. These penetrate the glass surface and cannot be buffed out.
  • Chips — from impacts at the edge or on the surface. More serious than scratches.
  • Cracks — a cracked hob is a safety concern and the hob should not be used until assessed.

Can Surface Scratches Be Repaired?

Very fine, shallow scratches on glass hobs can sometimes be reduced using cerium oxide glass polishing compound. This is the same material used to polish out scratches on car windscreens. The key word is “reduced” — polishing cannot make a scratch disappear entirely if it has penetrated the glass surface, but it can significantly improve appearance.

Important caveat: hob glass is tempered for safety, and aggressive polishing that generates heat or stress can theoretically compromise the temper. This technique is best performed by a professional who understands the material limitations.

When Does a Glass Hob Need Replacing?

  • Any crack — a cracked hob is a safety risk and must be replaced
  • Chips that penetrate into the heating element area
  • Deep scratches over the zone markings or control indicators
  • Scratches that have compromised the thermal coating on induction hobs

Prevention Is the Best Policy

Glass hobs scratch more easily than most people expect. Use soft-bottomed pans, lift rather than slide cookware, and clean with microfibre cloths and appropriate ceramic hob cleaner. Never use abrasive pads.
