Quartzite is a natural metamorphic stone that is frequently confused with quartz (which is engineered). Real quartzite worktops — Taj Mahal, White Macaubas, Sea Pearl, Super White — are among the most beautiful and exclusive kitchen surfaces, but they require specialist care and repair due to their natural stone properties.
Quartzite vs Quartz: An Important Distinction
Quartzite is a 100% natural metamorphic rock formed from sandstone under extreme heat and pressure. Despite the name, it is not the same as engineered quartz (Silestone, Caesarstone, etc.). Quartzite is harder than granite but, unlike engineered quartz, it is porous and can etch from acidic contact — so it behaves more like marble in terms of maintenance, even though it’s harder.
Common Quartzite Worktop Problems
- Chips — physical chip damage at edges and corners
- Etching — acid damage causing dull patches, particularly on lighter quartzites like Taj Mahal and Super White
- Scratches — surface scratches from metal utensils or abrasive cleaning
- Cracks — natural fissures that open, or impact cracks
- Fissure separation — natural fissures in the stone can open over time with movement
Chip Repair on Quartzite
Quartzite chips are repaired using natural stone repair compounds or coloured epoxy resin matched to the stone’s background colour. The translucency of many quartzites — particularly the white and cream tones — makes colour matching more challenging than on opaque materials. Hand-painted veining within the repair is typically required on heavily veined stones.
Etching Repair on Quartzite
Light to moderate etching on polished quartzite can be addressed through professional re-polishing using diamond abrasive compounds. Because quartzite is very hard, effective re-polishing requires appropriate equipment and expertise — attempting to re-polish quartzite with standard stone polishes is unlikely to achieve a satisfactory result.
