Types of Marks on Quartz Worktops
Not every mark on a quartz worktop is a genuine scratch. It’s worth understanding what you’re dealing with before reaching for a repair:
- Metal transfer marks — grey lines left by cutlery, pans or aluminium utensils. These look like scratches but are actually deposits of metal on the surface. Many can be removed with a non-abrasive cleaner or a dedicated quartz surface cleaner.
- Surface scuffs — light abrasion of the surface resin, appearing as fine matt lines. These are genuine scratches to the resin surface but are very shallow.
- Deep scratches — true abrasion cuts into the quartz crystal matrix. These require professional intervention to address.
- Chemical dulling — harsh chemicals (bleach, acidic cleaners, limescale removers) attack the resin binder and create a matt, etched patch rather than a directional scratch.
Can Quartz Scratches Be Repaired?
The answer depends on depth and extent:
- Light surface scuffs — can often be improved significantly by carefully re-polishing the affected area to restore the surface gloss
- Deep individual scratches — can be filled with colour-matched resin and polished, though the repair may be visible under certain lighting conditions
- Chemical dulling over a large area — more challenging; localised re-polishing may not blend perfectly with the untreated surrounding surface

Some situations — extensive chemical dulling over a large area, or deep parallel scratches from abrasive cleaning across the full worktop — may not produce a result that satisfies the client, and we’ll say so upfront.
