When you contact a surface repair company about a chipped quartz worktop, one of the first questions is about the edge profile. The shape of the edge has a significant effect on the difficulty and visibility of a repair — and understanding why helps set realistic expectations before work begins.
Common Quartz Worktop Edge Profiles
Eased or Pencil Edge
A straight, square edge with just the top corner lightly softened. This is the simplest profile and the easiest to repair — the chip is usually on the corner or the face of the edge, and the repair area is easily accessible and straightforward to finish flush.
Bullnose
A fully rounded edge — like the cross-section of a semicircle. Bullnose edges chip cleanly but the curved profile makes it more challenging to hand-finish the repair to exactly match the radius. Results are good but may not be quite as invisible as on a flat profile.
Ogee and Dupont
Decorative S-curved profiles, typically found on traditional or formal kitchen styles. Chips on ogee edges are more complex to repair due to the compound curve — the repair must follow the profile accurately to be unnoticeable. Achievable by an experienced technician but requires greater care and time.
Mitre and Waterfall Edges
A mitre edge joins two pieces of quartz at 45° to create a thick-looking edge. Chips at the mitre joint are common and require careful colour matching at the join. Waterfall edges (where the worktop continues vertically down the side of the unit) can also chip at the lower corner where the worktop meets the floor — a challenging but repairable location.
Bevelled Edge
A flat chamfer cut at 45° at the top edge. Chips on a bevelled edge are relatively easy to repair as the bevel provides a clear boundary between the repair area and the undamaged surface.
What Information to Provide for a Quote
When sending photographs for a repair estimate, include a close-up of the chip itself and a photo showing the full edge profile from the side. This gives our technicians the information they need to assess the complexity of the repair.
