Parquet Floor Repair: Fixing Chips, Cracks and Loose Blocks in Herringbone and Block Parquet

Parquet flooring — whether traditional solid wood block, engineered herringbone or Victorian chevron — adds enormous character and value to a property. But it’s also vulnerable to specific types of damage: chipped edges where blocks meet, cracking across the grain, lifted or loose blocks, and deep scratches through the surface finish. Understanding how to repair parquet correctly is essential to preserving both the appearance and the structural integrity of the floor.

Common Parquet Floor Problems

  • Chipped edges and corners — particularly common at doorways and high-traffic areas
  • Cracked blocks — caused by seasonal movement, drying out or subfloor movement
  • Loose or raised blocks — adhesive failure, moisture or subfloor issues
  • Deep scratches and gouges — from furniture, dropped objects or heavy footwear
  • Gaps between blocks — caused by shrinkage in central heating environments
  • Staining and discolouration — from water damage, chemical spills or UV fading

Repairing Chipped Parquet

Small chips and missing corners in parquet blocks can be repaired using a colour-matched wood filler or flexible epoxy compound. The repair material is built up in layers, shaped to profile, cured, and then sanded and finished to match the surrounding surface and sheen level. On herringbone and chevron patterns, colour-matching is more complex and requires careful attention to grain direction and tone variation.

Fixing Loose or Lifted Blocks

Loose parquet blocks that have become detached from the subfloor can usually be re-bonded. The block is carefully lifted, old adhesive residue removed from both the block and the subfloor, fresh flooring adhesive applied, and the block repositioned. Any gaps are filled and the surface refinished to blend.

When Is Full Sanding and Refinishing Needed?

For widespread surface scratching or uneven wear across a large area of parquet, a full sand-back and refinish may be more cost-effective than spot repairs. However, for isolated damage — a chipped block here, a crack there — targeted repair is far less disruptive and significantly cheaper than sanding the entire floor.
