Natural Stone Worktop Repair and Sealing: Granite, Quartz and Marble Maintenance

Natural stone and engineered stone worktops — granite, quartz, marble, quartzite, slate and limestone — are among the most desirable surfaces in modern kitchens. But they’re not maintenance-free. Chips, cracks, etching and staining can all affect the appearance of stone worktops over time. Understanding what’s repairable, what needs professional intervention and what good maintenance looks like can help you protect your investment.

Granite Worktop Repair

Granite is highly durable but can chip — particularly at edges and corners, and around the sink cutout, hob cutout and undermount bowl areas where the stone is unsupported. Chips in granite can be filled with a colour-matched epoxy filler, shaped to the profile of the edge and polished to match the surrounding surface. On many granites — particularly those with complex patterns and multiple colours — good quality repairs are very difficult to detect. Larger cracks in granite are more serious and may require structural attention as well as cosmetic repair.

Quartz Worktop Repair

Engineered quartz (Silestone, Caesarstone, Compac, Dekton and similar) is highly consistent in colour and pattern — which makes colour-matching for chips both more achievable (no need to match complex natural variation) and more demanding (the uniform colour makes any tonal difference more obvious). Edge chips and corner damage can be repaired using specialist quartz repair systems. Cracks in quartz — which do occur, usually from impact — can be stabilised and cosmetically repaired. See our dedicated quartz worktop repair guide for detailed advice.

Marble and Limestone Worktop Repair

Marble and limestone are relatively soft and porous compared to granite and quartz — which means they’re more susceptible to etching from acids (citrus juice, wine, vinegar) as well as chipping. Etching leaves a dull, slightly rough patch where the acid has reacted with the calcium in the stone — it’s not a scratch, and it can’t be buffed away, but it can be ground and re-polished by a specialist. Chips in marble can be filled with colour-matched filler and polished. Regular sealing is essential for marble and limestone worktops — a well-sealed surface resists staining and is easier to maintain.

Stone Worktop Sealing

Even low-porosity granites and all marbles and limestones benefit from periodic sealing. An impregnating stone sealer penetrates the surface and fills the micro-pores, reducing moisture and stain absorption without changing the surface appearance. Sealing should be reapplied every 1–3 years depending on use and the type of stone. When we carry out worktop repairs, we always recommend concurrent sealing to protect the repaired and surrounding stone.
