LVT and Vinyl Floor Repair: How to Fix Chips, Scratches and Lifting Edges

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and vinyl plank flooring are among the most popular floor coverings in UK homes and commercial properties — and for good reason. They’re waterproof, durable and come in a huge range of realistic wood and stone effects. But they’re not indestructible. Chips, deep scratches, lifting edges and burn marks do happen, and knowing whether to repair or replace individual planks or tiles can save hundreds of pounds.

Common LVT and Vinyl Floor Problems

  • Surface scratches and scuffs — from furniture, pet claws or grit underfoot
  • Chips and gouges — from dropped objects or heavy impact
  • Lifting edges and corners — caused by moisture ingress or adhesive failure
  • Burn marks — from dropped items or hot objects placed directly on the floor
  • Discolouration and staining — from chemical spills, bleach or UV exposure

Can LVT Be Repaired Rather Than Replaced?

In many cases, yes. The key factors are the depth and location of the damage:

Surface Scratches

Light surface scratches in the wear layer can often be polished out or filled with a specialist vinyl repair compound. A colour-matched filler restores the appearance without the need to remove any flooring.

Chips and Gouges

Deeper chips that penetrate through the wear layer can be repaired using a flexible vinyl filler, colour-matched to the floor pattern. The repair is hardened and the pattern may be re-grained or blended to match the surrounding plank or tile.

Lifting Edges

Lifting edges caused by adhesive failure or moisture can often be re-bonded — the edge is cleaned, fresh adhesive applied, and the edge pressed back down and clamped until set. If the plank itself has buckled or warped, replacement may be needed.

Burn Marks

Burn marks on vinyl typically penetrate the wear layer and can be difficult to repair invisibly. Light discolouration may be masked with a colour-matched filler and surface finish, but deep burns generally require plank or tile replacement.

DIY vs Professional LVT Repair

DIY vinyl repair kits are available and suitable for very minor scuffs. However, achieving an invisible repair on patterned LVT — especially wood-effect or stone-effect planks — requires colour-matching skill and surface finishing techniques that are difficult to replicate at home. Professional results that blend seamlessly with the surrounding floor are consistently better from an experienced technician.
