Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and plank flooring — including popular brands like Karndean, Amtico, Polyflor and Moduleo — has become the floor covering of choice in millions of UK homes and commercial properties. It’s durable, water-resistant and realistic-looking. But it can be damaged — and individual tile damage can be more visible than you’d expect. Here’s what you can do when LVT or Karndean flooring gets chipped, torn or gouged.
Why LVT Floors Get Damaged
- Heavy objects dropped from height causing chips or dents
- Furniture movement dragging across the surface
- Tears from sharp objects or pets’ claws
- Heat damage from items placed directly on the floor
- Lifting at joins or edges from moisture or poor installation
Can LVT and Karndean Floors Be Repaired?
Yes — with limitations. The most practical repair for individual damaged LVT or Karndean tiles or planks is replacement of the affected piece rather than surface filling. LVT flooring is designed as a modular system, and individual tiles can be lifted and replaced if they’re the click-lock or loose-lay type. Glue-down installations are more complex but replacement of individual pieces is still often achievable.
Surface chip and tear repairs using colour-matched resins are possible on LVT and offer a quick cosmetic solution where replacement isn’t practical — for example, in glue-down commercial installations or when matching stock is unavailable.
Karndean and Amtico Matching
One challenge with replacing LVT tiles is colour matching — Karndean and Amtico release new ranges regularly, and older designs are periodically discontinued. If matching stock is unavailable, a surface repair using colour-matched resins provides the best cosmetic result without lifting the surrounding floor.
When Surface Repair Is the Right Choice
- The original tile design is discontinued
- The damage is small and in a low-visibility area
- The floor is a glued commercial installation where lifting is impractical
- A tenant has caused damage and a quick repair is needed before check-out
