Krion and HI-MACS Solid Surface Repair: Chips, Scratches and Damage

Krion (by Porcelanosa) and HI-MACS (by LG Hausys) are premium solid surface materials widely used in high-end kitchens, bathrooms and commercial spaces. Like Corian, they offer a seamless, non-porous surface that’s visually striking — but they can still chip, scratch and mark. Here’s what you need to know about repairing Krion and HI-MACS solid surface.

What Are Krion and HI-MACS?

Both materials are acrylic solid surface composites — a blend of acrylic resin and mineral filler pressed into sheets. Unlike natural stone, they’re homogeneous throughout: the colour goes all the way through the material, which has significant implications for repairability. Both materials are used for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity tops, shower walls, basins and reception desks.

Common Types of Damage

Scratches

Because the colour goes all the way through solid surface materials, shallow scratches can be sanded out in many cases. This is one of the key selling points of solid surface — light abrasion doesn’t reveal a different-coloured core beneath. Deeper scratches require filling and polishing for a smooth result.

Chips and Edge Damage

Edge chips on Krion and HI-MACS worktops are repaired using compatible solid surface adhesive and pigments, then sanded back flush and polished. The result is typically very clean given the uniform colour of the material.

Burn Marks

Both materials can discolour under sustained heat — despite being more heat-resistant than acrylic bath surfaces. Burn marks appear as a dull, sometimes yellowed patch. Minor burns can often be sanded out on white and light-coloured solid surfaces; more severe marks require filling and surface refinishing.

Staining

Solid surface is technically non-porous, but strong dyes (wine, berries, coffee) can discolour lighter-coloured surfaces over time, particularly if left for extended periods. Chemical staining — from bleach or strong cleaning products — also occurs. Staining can often be sanded out on white solid surfaces.

Professional Repair vs DIY

Solid surface sands and polishes better than any other worktop material — which means minor repairs can sometimes be managed by a competent DIYer with the right abrasives. However, colour-matching for filled chips and cracks requires professional-grade adhesive and pigments specific to the product range. For any visible chip or crack, professional repair gives a significantly better result.
