Kitchen Worktop Burn Repair: What Works and What Doesn’t

A burn mark on a kitchen worktop — from a pan set down without a trivet, a hot appliance, or a carelessly placed cigarette — is one of the most common types of kitchen damage in UK homes. The good news is that burn damage on most worktop materials is repairable, though the approach varies significantly by material.

Laminate Worktop Burns

Laminate (Formica-style) worktops are the most common in UK kitchens and also the most vulnerable to burns. The laminate surface scorches and discolours when exposed to heat, and the damage penetrates the surface layer. Severe burns may cause the laminate to bubble or delaminate.

Can it be repaired? Yes. Small burns and scorch marks on laminate worktops can be filled with a colour-matched resin filler and refinished. The repair won’t be completely invisible on close inspection but will dramatically reduce the visibility of the damage. For larger or more severe burns, the affected section can be cut out and replaced (a worktop repair specialist can make this join almost invisible).

Solid Wood Worktop Burns

Solid hardwood worktops are more forgiving than laminate when burned. The char can be carefully sanded away, and the surrounding area refinished with oil or wax to match. For deeper burns, the charred material is removed and the void filled with a coloured resin before refinishing.

Can it be repaired? Usually yes, even for fairly significant burns. Wood is sandable, so damage that penetrates only partway through the surface can be addressed without replacing the board.

Quartz and Granite Worktop Burns

Stone worktops — quartz and granite — are heat-resistant and generally don’t scorch under normal kitchen use. However, extreme heat can cause quartz (which contains polymer resins) to discolour or crack. Granite handles heat better but can crack if subject to sudden thermal shock.

Can it be repaired? Discolouration from heat on quartz is difficult to reverse. If the surface is damaged rather than just discoloured, filling and colour-matching is possible but very technique-dependent. See our guide to quartz worktop repair for more detail.

Corian and Solid Surface Burns

Corian and similar solid surface materials are made from acrylic resin and can discolour or scorch under heat. The advantage is that solid surface can be sanded — minor burns can sometimes be sanded and polished out entirely. Deeper damage requires filling and refinishing.
