The kitchen splashback takes more punishment than almost any other surface in the room — heat, grease, knocks from pots and pans, and the daily pressures of cooking. When chips, cracks, scratches or delamination appear in your splashback, repair is almost always faster and cheaper than replacement.
Glass Splashback Repair
Toughened glass splashbacks are popular for their sleek look and ease of cleaning — but they’re not immune to damage. Common problems include:
Edge Chips on Glass Splashbacks
The edges and corners of glass splashbacks are vulnerable to chipping — usually from contact with a pan handle, a cleaning brush or an adjacent appliance being moved. Edge chips on glass can be polished and refined in some cases, but where the chip is through the glass body, colour-matched filler and surface restoration is more appropriate. On a plain-coloured glass panel, repairs can be very difficult to detect.
Scratches on Glass Splashbacks
Deep scratches — from abrasive cleaning pads or sharp utensils — can be polished out on glass splashbacks using diamond polishing compounds. Light scratches respond well; deep gouges may require the scratch to be filled and finished rather than polished. Either way, repair is far preferable to replacing the whole panel.
Tile Splashback Repair
Ceramic and porcelain tile splashbacks are prone to chips at corners and edges, and occasionally cracks from thermal expansion or impact. Individual tile chips can be filled and colour-matched with good results on plain and semi-plain tiles. More decorative or handmade tiles may require a more creative approach. Grout deterioration — crumbling, staining, mould — is best addressed by grout replacement or repair, which can transform the look of an older splashback without retiling.
Acrylic and Panel Splashback Repair
Acrylic and composite panel splashbacks (Perspex-style, or solid acrylic board) can develop surface scratches, chips at edges and discolouration over time. Surface scratches can be buffed and polished. Edge damage can be filled and finished. Yellowing or discolouration is harder to reverse — but if the panel is otherwise sound, re-coating with an appropriate finish can restore the appearance significantly.
