How to Care for a Laminate Worktop and Keep It Looking New

Laminate is the most popular worktop surface in UK kitchens, and for good reason: it is hard-wearing, easy to live with and available in almost every finish imaginable. But like any surface it responds to how it is treated. A little day-to-day care goes a long way towards keeping a laminate worktop looking new and avoiding the chips, burns and swelling that so often lead to a repair call. Here is how to look after yours.

Get everyday cleaning right

Most laminate worktops only need warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. Wipe up spills as they happen, especially anything acidic or strongly coloured such as red wine, turmeric, beetroot or coffee, which can stain if left to sit. Avoid abrasive cream cleaners, scouring pads and bleach-heavy products, as these dull the finish over time and can leave fine scratches that trap dirt. Dry the surface after cleaning so water is not left pooling, particularly along the edges and around the sink.

Protect against heat and burns

Laminate has a decorative top layer that is not designed to take direct heat. Placing a hot pan, baking tray or curling straighteners straight onto the surface can scorch it in seconds, leaving a permanent mark. Always use a trivet, heat mat or wooden board under anything hot, and keep small heat-producing appliances such as toasters and kettles a little away from the surface. Once a laminate worktop is burnt the top layer is damaged for good, but the good news is that a professional burn repair can rebuild and recolour the area rather than replacing the whole worktop.

Stop water damage and swelling

The most common cause of laminate worktop failure in the UK is water getting into the core board underneath. The particleboard beneath the laminate swells when it gets wet, and this shows up as raised, spongy edges, usually around the sink, the hob cut-out or any join. Reseal any gaps where the worktop meets the sink, tiles or splashback with fresh silicone, and check regularly that this seal has not cracked or peeled. Never leave standing water or a wet cloth draped over the front edge. If you already have a swollen edge, it needs attention quickly before the damage spreads.

Guard against chips and scratches

Always cut on a chopping board rather than directly on the worktop; even a sharp knife dragged across laminate will leave a scratch that catches the light. Lift heavy pots and appliances rather than sliding them, as dragging grit across the surface is what causes most fine scratches. Chips tend to appear along the front edge and around the sink where hard items get knocked against them. Small chips and scratches do not have to mean a new worktop, though. A specialist scratch repair can blend the mark back into the surrounding pattern so it is no longer noticeable.

Know when it is time for a professional repair

Good habits prevent a lot of damage, but accidents happen in a busy kitchen. Burns, deep chips, cracked corners and swollen edges are all things that a DIY filler rarely fixes convincingly, because matching the colour, pattern and sheen of laminate takes the right materials and a practised eye. Our team repairs laminate worktops in place, usually in a single visit, so there is no need to rip out and replace a surface that is otherwise perfectly good.

If your laminate worktop has picked up damage that everyday care cannot undo, the easiest first step is to send us a few photos. We will tell you honestly whether it is repairable and give you a fast, no-obligation quote. Learn more about our worktop repair service and get in touch today.
