Granite has been one of the UK’s most popular kitchen worktop materials for decades — and for good reason. Its natural beauty, heat resistance, and durability make it an enduring choice. But granite, despite its hardness, is not immune to chipping. Edges, corners, and hob cutouts are particularly vulnerable. This guide covers everything you need to know about granite chip repair.
Why Granite Chips
Granite is extremely hard — around 6–7 on the Mohs hardness scale — but it’s also crystalline in structure, which makes it brittle under sharp impact. A heavy pan dropped at an angle near an edge, a cleaver striking the worktop with force, or impact from a falling appliance can all cause chips. Hob cutouts are particularly vulnerable because the stone around the opening has less support.
Types of Granite Chip Damage
- Small surface chip — the most common and most straightforwardly repairable type
- Edge chip — very common; effectively repaired in most cases
- Corner chip — the corner is the most vulnerable point; repaired well but may show slightly more post-repair
- Hob cutout chip — extremely common due to thin stone around the opening; consistently good repair results
- Running crack — more challenging than a chip; can sometimes be stabilised and filled but wider advice should be sought
The Granite Chip Repair Process
Our technicians mix specialist polyester repair compounds on-site, carefully matching the colour and grain of your specific granite. The compound is applied in layers, each cured before the next is added, and then shaped and polished to blend with the surrounding surface. For speckled granites, the technician may add pigment flecks to better match the stone’s natural appearance.
Colour Matching Granite
Granite comes in hundreds of varieties — from absolute black to Kashmir white, Ubatuba to Baltic brown. Each has a unique combination of mineral colours, crystal sizes, and veining patterns. An experienced repair technician will assess your specific granite and prepare a colour mix that matches as closely as possible. For most common granite varieties, a very good match is achievable.
What to Expect from a Granite Repair
For small to medium chips on standard granite varieties, the repaired area will be very difficult or impossible to detect under normal kitchen lighting. Larger chips or unusual granite patterns may result in a more visible repair — but will always represent a significant improvement on the unrepaired chip. Our technicians will give you an honest assessment before starting work.
