Dekton and Sintered Stone Worktop Repair: What’s Possible and What Isn’t

Dekton, Neolith, Lapitec and other sintered stone worktops are among the most durable surfaces available for UK kitchens — ultra-hard, heat-resistant, scratch-resistant and stain-resistant. But that same hardness that makes them so resilient also makes them brittle under sudden impact. When a sintered stone worktop chips, the result is dramatic — and understanding your repair options requires some honesty about what’s achievable.

What Is Sintered Stone?

Sintered stone is manufactured by applying extreme heat and pressure to a blend of raw natural materials — creating an ultra-compact, non-porous surface. The process produces a material that’s harder than granite, more heat-resistant than quartz, and UV-stable for outdoor use. Popular brands in the UK include Dekton (Cosentino), Neolith (TheSize), Lapitec and Inalco.

How Do Sintered Stone Worktops Chip?

Despite their hardness, sintered stone surfaces are susceptible to impact chipping — a conchoidal fracture where force applied at a point causes a cone-shaped piece to break away. This typically happens at edges, corners and around sink cutouts — the most vulnerable points. The chip is usually clean and dramatic, leaving a bright white exposed area against the dark or patterned surface.

Can Dekton Be Repaired?

Yes — with realistic expectations. Sintered stone chip repair uses professional composite resins that are colour-matched to the specific Dekton or Neolith design. The challenge is the complexity of many sintered stone designs: ultra-realistic marble and stone effects with fine veining are significantly harder to match than plain or concrete-effect surfaces.

The repair will be visible under close inspection in many cases — the goal is not invisible perfection but a result that’s not noticeable at normal viewing distance. On heavily textured or complex designs, this is achievable. On very pale, minimal designs (Kira, Arga), the repair is more conspicuous.

When Repair Is the Right Choice

  • The chip is at an edge or corner that’s not the main visual focal point
  • The worktop design is dark, textured or complex (easier to blend)
  • Replacement would involve removing a large slab — disrupting the entire kitchen
  • The design has been discontinued

When Replacement May Be Better

  • The chip is large and in the centre of a very pale, minimal design
  • The worktop is under warranty from the fabricator
  • The damage is so extensive that repair would cover a significant portion of the visible surface
