Corian Worktop Repair: Chips, Scratches and Burns Fixed

Corian — and its equivalents like Hi-Macs, Staron and Avonite — is one of the most repairable worktop materials available. Because it’s a solid, homogenous material (not a surface finish over a different substrate), damage can often be sanded out completely rather than just patched. But not all Corian damage is the same, and the repair approach matters.

What Is Corian?

Corian is a solid surface material made from a mixture of acrylic (PMMA) and aluminium trihydrate. It was developed by DuPont and is now produced by several manufacturers. The key characteristic from a repair perspective is that the colour and texture run all the way through the material — so scratches and chips can be sanded or abraded away rather than just filled over.

Types of Corian Damage and Repair Options

Surface Scratches

Light to moderate scratches in Corian can usually be sanded out completely using progressively finer abrasive pads and then polished back to the original finish. On matte surfaces, this is particularly effective and leaves no trace.

Chips and Gouges

Where material is missing, a colour-matched Corian filler or offcut can be used to fill the void, then sanded flush and polished to blend with the surrounding surface. On standard Corian colours, the repair can be effectively invisible. Patterned or stone-effect Corian requires more careful technique to blend the repair.

Burns and Heat Damage

Corian is susceptible to heat — a pan placed without a trivet can scorch or discolour the surface. Minor scorching can sometimes be sanded away. More significant heat damage that has changed the material’s structure requires filling and resurfacing. Full resurfacing of a section by a specialist leaves very little visible trace.

Cracks and Joint Failures

Corian can crack if the substrate beneath it is uneven or moves. Failed joints between Corian sections can also open up. These can be repaired by re-joining with colour-matched adhesive and sanding the seam flat — the joint becomes virtually invisible.

How Much Does Corian Repair Cost?

Most spot repairs to Corian worktops — a single chip, burn or scratch — cost between £90 and £200 depending on the size of the damage and colour complexity. Larger-scale resurfacing is priced by the linear metre.
