Corian is DuPont’s brand of solid surface material — a composite of acrylic and alumina trihydrate — used extensively for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanities, window sills and wall cladding. One of Corian’s most celebrated features is its repairability: because it is solid throughout with no surface coating, it can be sanded, buffed and repaired in ways that other materials cannot.
What Can Be Repaired on Corian?
- Deep scratches — Corian can be sanded and re-polished to remove scratches from the surface
- Burns and scorch marks — heat damage that has discoloured or slightly melted the surface can often be sanded out
- Chips — missing pieces can be filled with matched Corian dust and adhesive, then sanded level
- Cracks — filled and sanded to invisible
- Staining — most stains can be removed by sanding back the surface, as the colour goes all the way through
- Joint separation — the adhesive joints between Corian sections can be re-glued and refinished
The Solid Surface Advantage
Unlike laminate, quartz or stone worktops — which have a surface coating or pattern that cannot be restored once damaged — Corian is the same colour and material all the way through. This means that sanding the surface removes damaged material and reveals a fresh, undamaged layer underneath. For scratches and light burn marks, this makes Corian essentially self-repairable by a professional.
Colour Matching Corian for Chips and Cracks
For chip repairs where material is missing, Corian dust from the original colour is mixed with adhesive to create a perfectly matched filler. Genuine Corian material is required for a colour-matched repair — our technicians carry a range of the most common Corian colours including Glacier White, Cameo White, Linen, Bisque, Deep Nocturne and many others.
Non-DuPont Solid Surface Materials
Other solid surface brands including Hi-Macs (LG), Staron (Samsung), Krion (Porcelanosa) and Meganite are also repairable using similar techniques. If you’re not sure which brand of solid surface you have, a photograph will usually allow us to identify it.
