Composite Worktop Repair: Fixing Chips and Damage in Franke, Astralite and Axiom

Composite worktops — sold under brand names including Franke, Astralite, Earthstone, Axiom Cladding and others — are engineered kitchen surface materials combining stone particles, resins and fillers to produce a durable, easy-to-clean surface. When these worktops chip, crack or burn, repair is usually straightforward with the right materials and expertise.

What Makes Composite Worktops Different

Unlike solid granite (where colour and pattern are natural and variable) or laminate (a surface layer over a chipboard core), composite worktops are engineered to be consistent in colour and structure throughout — or close to it. This means: chip repairs can achieve a very good colour match, since there’s no complex natural variation to replicate; the material is more uniform in its absorption and finish characteristics; and repairs can be polished to a consistent sheen relatively easily.

Common Composite Worktop Damage

Edge Chips

The most common damage type in composite worktops is edge chipping — at corners, around the hob cutout, around the sink cutout, and at joints and seams. Edge chips can be filled with colour-matched filler, shaped to the correct profile, and polished to a smooth finish. On plain or lightly coloured composite worktops, results are very good.

Burn Marks

Composite worktops are more susceptible to heat damage than granite but more resistant than laminate. A burn from a pan base or a hot oven tray can scorch the surface, leaving a dark or discoloured area. Burn repair involves careful removal of the affected material, filling and finishing to blend with the surrounding surface.

Scratches

Deep scratches in composite worktops are repairable by filling, sanding and polishing. Light surface scratches can sometimes be polished out without filling. The key is assessing the depth — whether the scratch has gone into the body of the material or only affected the topcoat finish.

Specific Brand Repair Notes

Different composite worktop products have different compositions that affect repair approach. Franke composite worktops (used widely in 1990s-2000s kitchens) are a resin-and-mineral composite that repairs well. Astralite and similar products are slightly different in their mineral loading and binder chemistry but respond to the same repair techniques.
