Composite Door Chips and Scratches: Can They Be Repaired?

Composite doors are the most popular front door choice in the UK — durable, secure, and available in a wide range of colours and styles. But they’re not indestructible. Chips, deep scratches, and surface damage do occur, particularly around door furniture, edges, and areas prone to impact. The question is whether they can be repaired — and in most cases, yes.

What Is a Composite Door Made Of?

Most composite doors consist of a solid foam core (polyurethane or similar) with a glass reinforced plastic (GRP) skin applied over it. The colour is either in the GRP material itself or applied as a factory finish. This construction makes composite doors very different from solid wood or uPVC — and affects how they can be repaired.

Types of Composite Door Damage

  • Surface chips — where the outer skin has been chipped, often near the bottom edge, around the letterbox or lock, or along the edge of the door
  • Deep scratches — usually from keys or tools catching the surface; can expose the underlying material
  • Fading or discolouration — UV degradation causing colour shift, particularly in south-facing doors; not a chip repair but a respray issue
  • Textured surface damage — woodgrain-effect GRP surfaces are textured, and matching this texture in a repair requires skill

Can Composite Door Chips Be Repaired?

Yes. A professional surface repair technician can fill chips in composite doors using a specialist filler, then apply a colour-matched finish. On solid colours (e.g. anthracite grey, black, white), repairs blend well. On woodgrain-effect doors, matching the texture as well as the colour requires a specialist — but is achievable.

The alternative is replacing the door panel or the entire door — at a cost of £500–£1,500 or more including installation. A professional chip repair typically costs a fraction of this.

Composite Door Respraying

If a composite door has faded significantly or has widespread surface damage, a full respray is an option — painting the entire door in a colour-matched or new colour using automotive-grade spray equipment. This can transform a tired-looking door and is far cheaper than replacement.
