Composite Decking Repair: Chips, Scratches and Damaged Boards

Composite decking has become increasingly popular in UK gardens as a low-maintenance alternative to timber. Made from a blend of wood fibre and plastic, composite decking is resistant to rot and splitting — but it’s not damage-proof. Chips, scratches, scuff marks and impact damage do occur, and professional repair can address localised damage without the need to replace entire boards or sections. Here’s what you need to know.

Common Types of Composite Decking Damage

Surface Scratches and Scuffs

Composite decking scratches from heavy furniture, plant pots being dragged, tools dropped, or pets. Light surface scratches on composite decking can sometimes be reduced by careful use of a heat gun — the composite material responds to heat and can self-heal minor surface marks. Deeper scratches may require professional colour-matched filling.

Chips and Impact Damage

Heavy objects dropped from height can chip composite decking boards, leaving a visible depression or missing section. Chip repairs on composite decking use specialist exterior-grade repair compounds that can be matched to the board colour.

Fading and Discolouration

UV exposure causes composite decking to fade and discolour over time, particularly in south-facing installations. Significant fading across the whole deck is better addressed with specialist composite decking restoration coatings than with localised repair.

Repair vs Board Replacement

Whether repair or replacement makes more sense depends on the extent and location of the damage. A single chip in an otherwise good deck board in a prominent location is a strong candidate for repair. Multiple chips and significant fading across several boards may be better addressed by replacement.

One practical consideration: composite decking boards from even a few years ago may be discontinued or have changed in colour specification. Repair avoids the matching problem that can arise when trying to replace boards in an established deck.
